Mihintale in the Central North of Sri Lanka, is the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. After climbing the 1850 ancient steps you can see why. Mihintale is located on the top of a hill that has spectacular views of the countryside below. The main area is a small plateau that has a central Bodhi tree and is surrounded by a Dagoba (a Buddhist dome shrine), a large statue of Lord Buddha and a rock look out. Sitting under the fragrant frangipani trees in the cool breeze you can’t help but get a bit spiritual as you absorb the serenity of this hill top oasis.
